Freedom is first and foremost a very spacious yacht measuring 62’ x 33’ she has over 2000 sq. ft. of deck space. The huge covered cockpit has ample seating for all and is great for alfresco dining. Unlike many of the contemporary catamarans she has a teak interior throughout. Freedom has two dive compressors and dive gear for 10 people and a new 19’ dinghy with a 115 hp motor offering water sports for one and all. Being a trimaran, Freedom is not only spacious, but very stable and a superb Caribbean sailing yacht, capable of doing 12 knots off the wind.

The trimaran design offers you a several large deck areas for sunbathing during the day or cocktails and appetizers at sunset. The cockpit is also large, and can seat everyone for meals with a panoramic view of the islands.

Freedom's Crew

Captain Richard DeBadts and Melissa DiFilippo

Captain Richard grew up in upstate New York and fell in love with sailing on the Great Lakes, where he spent as much time as possible sailing and racing on Lake Erie. He has extensive sailing and cruising experience along the entire US East Coast down through the Caribbean and has transited the Panama Canal twice aboard small sailing yachts, sailing the Pacific coast of Central America and Mexico. Over the past seven years, he has lived aboard sailboats in New England, Chesapeake Bay, Florida and the Caribbean.

Richard has completed numerous offshore sailboat deliveries and has worked professionally as a Marine Surveyor and Shipwright's Apprentice. He has worked aboard several yachts and most recently served as Captain/Engineer aboard a privately-owned 78-ft. Motor Vessel followed by Engineer aboard a 160-ft. charter sailing yacht that extensively cruised New England and the Caribbean. He holds his U.S. Coast Guard 150-ton Masters License along with his M.C.A. 200-ton Yachtmaster License.

Richard is an avid snorkeler and scuba diver. He loves to lead guests on both, ocean & shoreside excursions, to share the beauty and lore of the Caribbean and enjoys stargazing at night - sharing his knowledge of night sky and its awesome beauty.

Chef and First Mate:Melissa DiFilippo

Melissa grew up in Rhode Island and spent her summers on Cape Cod where she learned to sail. She lived on Narragansett Bay for many years, and has a deep-rooted passion for sailing and the sea. She moved from Narragansett Bay to the Virgin Islands to pursue a dream of working on a charter sailing yacht.

Melissa was fortunate to have grown up in a family of wonderful cooks who prepared everything from scratch using warm, wholesome, fresh ingredients. Their influence makes creating delicious, nurturing, fresh meals second nature to her. Melissa has developed a passion for entertaining over the past 20 years by hosting countless private dinner parties, pool parties and bar-b-ques. Her need to ensure guest satisfaction has honed her ability to anticipate their wishes. She is a natural hostess with a gift to make everyone feel right at home and pampered.

Her background in guest services is extensive. She has years of experience working as a personal assistant to some of Narragansett Bay’s finest families always anticipating their needs and providing the best possible service. Having worked for the Conanicut Yacht Club for over eleven years as the Director of Member Services she continued to develop knowledge of the sailing community and perfected her service experience. She also began an internship in the Club’s restaurant kitchen alongside Executive Chef Christopher Kaya working to perfect her intuitive cooking talents.

A versatile cook, Melissa enjoys creating dishes using a wide variety of fresh and local ingredients. She is always happy to accommodate the special requests of her guests and enjoys preparing a host of delicious dishes ranging from seafood, local specialties, comfort foods, and vegetarian fare.
