These Fully Equipped, value priced yachts are available
fully crewed or with the "Captain Only" value option for sailing
yachts. You and your group are the Crew on Captain Only Charters. The
captain's role is primarily as guide, advisor, and helmsman.
You sail the boat, purchase and physically obtain provisions,
cook, clean, and do everything necessary to operate the yacht.
Plus All Expenses
- Provisions: include all food, beverage, and ice consumed onboard
including the captain's meals, meals ashore.
- Running expenses: include fuel for yacht, generator and tender;
mooring fees: bulk fresh water (about 20¢/gallon), & requested
Dockage.
- Taxes - including cruising taxes, National Park fees, custom clearance
fees,
Some yachts do include food, fuel, even ice making cost
estimates easier for all involved.
Unlike a bareboat, these yachts include all the watersports
equipment, individually listed on each yacht's page although yachts
with onboard SCuba usually do charge additional for it. You are not
required to maintain a damage deposit. The overall responsibility of
the yacht remains with the captain. The captains are not the part time
transients normally associated with the bareboat fleets. All captains
are fully qualified, most are owner/operators of the yacht. They have
made sailing a full time permanent part of their lives.
This is a great way to enhance your boat handling skills,
and save a little money.
Partial Board
Some Captain Only yachts have started to offer a partial board
option.
In some cases this is an interesting option. More frequently the offer
is but a slight reduction from fully crewed rates and access to the
galley is restricted. In most instances, Guest "must" eat
ashore with this option. Generally you have no galley privileges. This
could be attractive to charters with adults who intend to go ashore
to socialize, not so much for families on a budget.
Summary
The U.S. And British Virgin Islands have consitent, modern, stores which
make provisioning easy. Food is more expensvie than in the states or
Canada but generally of good quality. Outside the Virgins,
In short, this list is not inclusive all "Captain
Only" charters available, only which fairly price their reduced
service offering. Consider the cost of the "all expenses"
when planning your trip. It rarely makes sense for one couple. It can
work out nicely for larger groups, especially families.

Larger yachts, those able to comfortably accommodate 6 or more guests,
require considerable boat handling skills, and constant maintenance
in order to retain quality condition. Most larger yachts have a permanent
crew of 2 or more to attend to these tasks and cannot be reasonably
offered on a captain only basis. The majority of charter yachts
are only offered as fully crewed yachts.
Keep in mind, you are responsible for acquiring the provisions as well
as the purchase price. Groups arriving in the late afternoon should
consider staying in a hotel the day prior to boarding their yacht in
order to allow time to get organized or alternatively, hire the provisioning
task. Many Captains are willing to provide this service for an additional
fee. There are companies who specialize in this service in St. Thomas,
and Tortola.
