Captain Captain Marcel Dekker
and crew
Marcel Dekker - Captain Captain Marcel was born in Zimbabwe from
Dutch decent. Although from a land locked nation, his love for
adventure and the sea began early when he joined the South African
Merchant Marine at the age of 18. He completed his officer’s training
in 5 years, sailing in Asia, Europe, North and South America,
Africa and Antarctica. During a circumnavigation, Captain Marcel
was lured to the Caribbean and was commissioned Master of his
first Sailing Cruise ship at the age of 25, with 145 passengers
and 55 crew. Almost 20 years later, Captain Marcel has maintained
his Masters license in the United States, the United Kingdom and
South Africa. He has utilized his skills chartering yachts, both
power and sail, and in the commercial passenger ship industry.
He possesses the utmost knowledge regarding International Safety
Standards and US Coast Guard Regulations and Security, and assures
Symphony II compliance. However, on board Captain Marcel portrays
a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, focusing on individualized
personal service.
Charlene
Van Niekerk – First Mate/Engineer
Charlene was born in Pretoria, South Africa. Charlene worked as
a Hardware Specialist in the computer business and after many successful
years she decided to travel and explore the yachting industry. After
completing her Yacht Master Coastal and STCW courses in Durban,
South Africa, she came to Ft Lauderdale where she started her first
job as a Deckhand on a 150ft motor yacht. While she worked as a
Deckhand she decided that this is the career she wants to pursue
and she continued her studies, completed the necessary courses and
was then promoted as First Mate. She achieved her MCA 200 ton Captain’s
License and worked as First Mate for a few years while she also
managed to oversee a 157ft New Build. Charlene is very active and
loves the outdoors. Her goal is to make sure all guests have an
adventurous and fun time onboard at all times!
Lizette Sim – Stewardess
Lizette was born and raised in South Africa. She completed her Degree
in Food Service Management in the year 2000, and after her in-service
training period she worked her way up from Breakfast Chef to Food
& Beverage Manager in a Five Star Luxury Suite Hotel. After two
successful years in hospitality she decided to pursue her career
as a stewardess in the yachting arena. She started as a crew Cook/Stewardess
in 2002 and has worked her way up to Chief Stewardess on large motor
yachts in the past four years. Lizette has a passion for learning
about different Cuisines & Wines from Countries all over the World
and uses her knowledge and experience to give professional and high
standard service to all guests onboard.
Mike Nichols - Chef
Mike started working in the culinary field at the early age of 15.
Just out of high school he attended San Jacinto College in Houston,
Texas. where he studied Culinary Arts. In 1995 Mike moved to Orlando
to attend the Disney Culinary Academy. For his third and final year
of school, Mike was given the opportunity to work at Disneyland
Paris. He spent the year working at the Manhattan restaurant in
the Hotel New York. On his return to the states, he took a position
as Restaurant Chef at Disney's Fort Wilderness Campgrounds. In 2001,
he moved to the Ft. Lauderdale area where he worked as a Pastry
Chef at Mark's on Las Olas, Florida. Mike started working privately
on yachts in 2004 to meet his passion for travel. He is an accomplished
chef of French, Italian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and American Fusion,
and knows how to cater to most dietary requirements. He will cater
to your personal taste and present scrumptious and beautifully decorated
food. Mikes outgoing personality and flare for cooking, will make
your time aboard Symphony II a comfortable, relaxing and pleasurable
mix.
Erik Boyko – Deckhand/Steward
Erik was born in New Hampshire and lived there continuously until
moving to the Midwest for college. He graduated this past June with
a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. A few months
later, he packed his things and moved to Fort Lauderdale to broaden
his horizons in the yachting industry. Erik found Symphony II in
the weeks before the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. New to the industry,
he offers abundant energy and optimism to each charter. His interests
include literature, architecture, art theory and history, and urban
studies. Erik is hard working, loves the outdoors and is here to
help you make the most of your vacation on board Symphony II.
